This is How Getting Two Puppies Completely Disrupted My Life and Career...
In 2004, we got 2, 8 week old Parson Terrier puppies – boys from the same litter – it was SO exciting!
Getting ‘the boys’ enrolled in a puppy socialization class proved to be difficult as the trainers were booked up months in advance, so I spoke to numerous dog trainers.
Their words still ring in my ears today, they said…
“YOU’LL NEED TO RE-HOME ONE OF YOUR DOGS.”
Oh my gosh… I’d been naive. I hadn’t researched properly. I innocently thought two dogs would mean double the joy. Clearly I was wrong.
The dog trainers said,
“It’s the worst-case scenario, because the puppies are from the same litter they’ll do what they like and will fight for the top dog position – it’ll get really nasty.”
My heart sank. Oh my goodness… what had I done. I couldn’t give one up – it’d be like choosing one of your children – I couldn’t do that.
I looked at the 2 bundles of fluff that fitted nicely in each hand and said out loud,
“You two are NOT going anywhere.”
There had to be a way and I was on a mission to find out what it was…
I started by studying dog psychology. I examined and learned the language that dogs use in order to communicate and I recognized how they talk non-verbally all the time.
I watched how my two dogs interacted together and I started to get a good understanding about how a dog’s mind works and how I could meet their needs and expectations.
Importantly, I learned how I could place myself in the ‘top dog’ position in a kind and confident way.
But that was only one part of it.
The second part I discovered, which is SO crucial, is that you need to demonstrate the qualities that a pack leader has, which is someone who is confident, decisive and who can take control if there is a crisis.
Someone that is kind and gentle, but also definite and able to put down boundaries.
As time passed and with lots of trial and error it became clear that I was on to something – I was getting great results and I now had a burning desire to become a professional dog trainer, but sadly it felt like a pipe dream.
You see, I didn’t know where to start, I didn’t have a big budget, I knew nothing about social media and had no knowledge about marketing.
Then one day I saw an opportunity that would completely changed my life forever…
I heard that BBC Radio 2, who has over 14 million weekly listeners, was going to get a dog expert on their show.
I believed I could help the listeners so I pitched the show…
In fact I pitched the BBC three times – this was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss out on and I was NOT going to give up easily!
… And finally… they said ‘Yes!’
Now, I know I had…
No website – just a business name and a page on an unrelated website
No followers or subscribers… and
No dog training business…
… But what I also knew was that I had a powerful message to share that would make a real difference in the world… So I went for it!
And guess what…
That ONE interview launched
my new career OVERNIGHT
and got me A-List CELEBRITY CLIENTS (including one of the SPICE GIRLS).
My dream came true easily and effortlessly.
