Training your dog is not as difficult as you might think.
Now there’s a bold statement for you! But it’s true — ANY dog owner can train their dog provided they’re willing to put in the time and effort.
Here are three essential principles that will help you succeed.
1. Consistency
🐶 Always use the same command for a specific behaviour. Different words will confuse your dog and delay results.
🐶 Remember, their name is not a command. Their name gets their attention — then you give the instruction.
🐶 Once you’ve set house rules (like no dogs in the kitchen while cooking), stick to them. If you allow exceptions, your previous training efforts will unravel.
🐶 Make sure the whole family is consistent too. If one person lets the dog break the rules, it weakens the training for everyone.
2. Timing
Timing is everything. Dogs live in the moment and connect only with what’s happening right now.
🐾 Praise immediately when they do something right.
🐾 Correct immediately when they misbehave or ignore a command.
🐾 Corrections should never mean hitting or shouting — use a calm, deep, confident voice.
There are two main approaches to corrections:
Instant verbal feedback – tell your dog “No!” or “Ah-ah!” the moment they misbehave.
Withdraw attention – ignore bad behaviour completely, and only give attention when your dog is calm and good.
Dogs crave attention. Whether it’s positive or negative, it’s still attention — which is why shouting often backfires.
Think about it:
🐶 Do you tell your dog to “get down” every time they jump up?
🐶 Do you chase them when they run off with your socks?
That’s attention — which means they’re rewarded for unwanted behaviour.
Instead, focus on giving your dog attention only when they behave. Praise warmly or give a treat so they associate good behaviour with rewards. Before long, they’ll repeat the good stuff far more often.
3. Training Time
Your frame of mind matters as much as theirs.
🐶 Don’t train when you’re tired, stressed or frustrated — it won’t be fair on your dog.
🐶 Use a calm, gentle tone and bring patience to every session.
🐶 Set aside regular training times and treat them as special moments with your dog.
The goal is to make training fun. Think of it as quality time together — building a bond, improving behaviour, and shaping a happy, well-balanced dog.
The Rewards
With consistency, good timing, and the right mindset, training doesn’t just teach behaviours — it builds trust and strengthens your relationship. And as every dog owner knows, the rewards of a happy, well-trained dog are endless.

HERE’S SOME MORE LOVE FROM SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE PEOPLE…
Vicky Townshend, Brighton Sussex
"After a few weeks of applying Sharon ’s methods, Henry and I are much more relaxed with each other and he has calmed down considerably. I would not hesitate to recommend Sharon Bolt to anyone struggling with a canine calamity. Money very well spent."
Rose Pattenden, Crawley Sussex
"I just had to write to say thank you. Since your visit I have got my lovely dog, Bonnie, and my life back! Peace reigns! Your technique works like magic, it is a miracle! (and worth every penny!) I couldn’t be more pleased."
Nikki Relffe-Arnold, Copthorne, Sussex
"Well! – I have two completely different dogs, we have gone from very serious fighting to two very balanced, obedient, and calm dogs! Your methods were incredibly simple to follow and slotted perfectly into our daily routine, but what a difference! As I am writing this I am watching the same two dogs who were previously fighting and drawing blood, rolling around on the floor playing together!
I cannot tell you how relieved I am that I contacted you and how much fun I am now having with the two of them. I would (and have!) recommend you to anyone who needs help with becoming leader of their pack! Thanks again."
