Dog Recall Training: How to Get Your Dog to Come Back Off the Lead (Part 1)

So many dog owners are nervous about letting their dog off the lead. Some never do it at all, while others simply unclip the lead and hope for the best!

That’s why recall training is so important.

It’s wonderful to watch dogs running free — but it’s only enjoyable when you can trust they’ll come back when called. Without that, walks become stressful, embarrassing, or even dangerous.

The Leadership Connection

Here’s the part many owners miss: recall training is not just about the “come” command — it starts with leadership on the lead.

If your dog isn’t already walking calmly by your side, chances are they’ll treat off-lead time as a free-for-all. Pack leaders do what they want, when they want. They’ll come back on their terms, not yours.

That’s why it’s vital to establish calm, consistent leadership before unclipping the lead. When your dog already respects your guidance, recall becomes 10 times easier.

How to Practise Safely

🐾 Use an extendable lead in the park while training — it gives your dog freedom while you still have control.

🐾 Reward recall with high-value treats so your dog clearly understands what’s expected.

🐾 Keep sessions short, positive, and consistent.

Remember — sometimes dogs aren’t being “naughty.” They may simply not understand what you want yet. Clear, calm communication makes all the difference.

The Joy of True Recall

Imagine unclipping the lead, watching your dog run free with joy, and knowing with confidence that they’ll return to you the moment you call. That’s the goal of recall training — and it’s absolutely achievable when leadership comes first.

HERE’S SOME MORE LOVE FROM SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE PEOPLE…

Vicky Townshend, Brighton Sussex

"After a few weeks of applying Sharon ’s methods, Henry and I are much more relaxed with each other and he has calmed down considerably. I would not hesitate to recommend Sharon Bolt to anyone struggling with a canine calamity. Money very well spent."

Rose Pattenden, Crawley Sussex

"I just had to write to say thank you. Since your visit I have got my lovely dog, Bonnie, and my life back! Peace reigns! Your technique works like magic, it is a miracle! (and worth every penny!) I couldn’t be more pleased."

Nikki Relffe-Arnold, Copthorne, Sussex

"Well! – I have two completely different dogs, we have gone from very serious fighting to two very balanced, obedient, and calm dogs! Your methods were incredibly simple to follow and slotted perfectly into our daily routine, but what a difference! As I am writing this I am watching the same two dogs who were previously fighting and drawing blood, rolling around on the floor playing together!

I cannot tell you how relieved I am that I contacted you and how much fun I am now having with the two of them. I would (and have!) recommend you to anyone who needs help with becoming leader of their pack! Thanks again."
